North East tech author celebrates third novel success

Stack of three SimCavalier books

The latest book in a Billingham author’s sci fi thriller series is attracting rave reviews from readers around the world. The third SimCavalier tale, Tangled Fortunes, which has just been released to five star acclaim, is partly set in the North East of England.

A series of cyber attacks brings the Argentum cybersecurity team to some recognisable spots on the County Durham coastline. Hartlepool power station plays a part, as do the marshes of Saltholme and Seal Sands, and the sweeping beaches of Seaton Carew and North Gare. There’s a nod to the underwater world, as well. “I’ve dived all along this coast, and it’s breathtaking,” says author Kate Baucherel. “I couldn’t write about the region without including the reefs and wrecks just off our shores.”

Kate is better known for her work in emerging technology, particularly focusing on blockchain and cryptocurrency. She was already an established writer with business books and technical articles published worldwide, but a chance meeting in 2016 steered her towards fiction.

“I was approached to write a serious book about cybersecurity,” she explains. “After tossing the idea around for a while, my contact suggested I do it as fiction.” A flash of inspiration for a story in the wake of the WannaCry ransomware attack has now spawned the three novels, a short story, and even an enquiry about adaptation.

A fourth tale is on the drawing board for release next year. “Cybersecurity is a wonderful theme to work with,” said Kate. “There are so many real-life tales to draw on for inspiration, and by keeping the stories grounded in real tech and real scenarios, they help readers to understand how to reduce the risk of suffering cyber attacks themselves.”
